Adjustment & Life Transitions: Are you struggling to adjust to life transitions such as a break-up, divorce or marriage? Are you pregnant or a new parent trying to deal with this major life change? Did you just change jobs or retire? Or perhaps you hare trying to find ways to cope with the loss or death of loved one? Whether desirable or undesirable, change can be hard. Loss is an inevitable part of change, and often elicits conflicting thoughts and feelings. Individual therapy can be helpful if you are considering making a change, are preparing for an upcoming change, or are adjusting to a change that's already occurred. If you could use some extra support coping with a change in your life, or would like to get a better understanding of why it is affecting you in particular ways, therapy can be a powerful way to do so.
Anxiety: Anxiety is a part of life, and serves valuable functions for us as "warning signals" for danger. However, all too often, especially in our culture, our warning system can get over-activated leaving us in chronic states of high arousal. Therapy provides a powerful forum to uncover and wean apart anxiety's underpinnings and provide you with practical solutions to manage and address it in lasting way. Anxiety can take many forms, some of which people don't immediately link with the term "anxiety". These include: panic attacks, phobias or avoidance of certain situations, body image issues, eating disorders, feeling chronically keyed up or on edge, anger outbursts, among many others.
Couples: Are you stuck in the same fights over and over again and don't know how to get out? Are you feeling a lack of trust and connection with your partner? Are you experiencing a loss of passion and feeling like roommates as opposed to lovers? Couples therapy can help. In couples therapy, practical tools are practiced to help you understand and change the patterns that have led you to feeling disconnected and to improve your relationship. Different areas that will be explored are: your needs, wants and what is getting in the way of getting those met; your communication strengths and opportunities; where you get triggered emotionally and how you can better manage your reactions; and what your role has been in co-creating your dynamics, and how you can each improve your relationship.
Depression: Depression can take many forms, including sadness, hopelessness, loss of interest in life, feelings of emptiness, sleep disturbances, and eating problems. A lot of us go through depression at some point in our lives; it can be more or less severe, and some suffer from depression more chronically or have repeated re-occurrences. Fortunately, therapy has been found to be powerfully effective in helping people recover from depression and prevent future relapses. "Talk Therapy" will help you learn tools to manage and change your mood, as well as uncover your depressions "underpinnings" so that you can avoid falling back into old depressive cognitive patterns.
Infertility, Pregnancy & Postpartum Depression and Anxiety: Bearing a child is presumed to be a biological prerogative, but what happens when things go wrong? And what happens when you've had a child, but are too depressed or anxious to enjoy or fulfill your new role as a parent? Reproductive challenges, and parenthood itself, can take a physical and emotional toll on both women and men, and can trigger new issues and conflicts in a relationship. Therapy can be helpful in providing psycho-education into the highly complex and emotional process of trying to conceive, failing to conceive, and what happens after conception and child-birth. Along with education, therapy is a forum in which to process the mal-adaptive thoughts that may prohibit someone from coping in the most effective ways, identify healthier alternatives, create a support network and develop other forms of coping.
Work Performance: Performance in the work-place can be a major area of concern for many. Common issues in this area include: feeling stuck or trapped in your job/career, difficulty finding or holding onto employment, trouble with assertiveness and self-advocacy, navigating work politics, chronic worry/anxiety about losing one's job, having trouble "turning off" work, difficulty balancing work and personal life, among many others. Therapy can be highly effective when incorporating aspects of career coaching with a deeper, more personal focus on your personality dynamics and how the might interface with your work life and hold you back in various ways.
